10 Healthy Halloween Treats

Having a kid who doesn’t eat candy, challenges me to find fun ways for her to enjoy Halloween without the sugar craze that goes along with it.  Whether your kids eat candy or not, plan a spook-tacular party by adding any of these healthy Halloween treats! (Note: No bugs were harmed in the making of these treats:)

1.  Mummy Apples

These mummy apples are so adorable, your kids may not want to eat them!

What you will need:

  • Apples (I used granny smiths)
  • Gauze tape (I used J&J Hurt Free Wrap-Small)
  • Candy eyes
  • A roll of fondant or candy melts

Directions:

1.  Rinse and dry your apples

2.  Roll the tape around the apple leaving an open space for the eyes.  Tuck the end to secure.

3.  Use a bit of fondant or a dollop of candy melt to attach the eyes.

2.  Clementine Pumpkins

These little “pumpkins” are too stinking cute and super easy to make.  Just peel, stick and eat.

What you will need:

  • Clementines
  • Celery

Directions:

1.  Peel the clementines

2.  Cut a piece of celery about 1/4 inch wide and 1 inch long.  Insert into the top of the clementine.

3.  Peanut Butter Dip

OMG! I don’t know how I came up with this combo, but I’m so glad I did.  Serve with fruit, veggies, graham crackers, pretzels or just about anything.

Ingredients:

1/2 cup creamy peanut butter

1 1/2 cups vanilla yogurt

2 tablespoons semisweet chocolate chips -you can add more if you like (optional)

Directions:

Melt the chocolate.  Stir all ingredients together until mixed well.  Serve with fruit, veggies, graham crackers, pretzels or just about anything!

4.  Halloween Fruit Kabobs

Fun shaped fruit is always a hit with kids!

What you will need:

  • Canteloupe
  • Honeydew melon
  • Grapes
  • Lollipop sticks or kabob skewers
  • Mini halloween shaped cookie cutters

Directions:

1.  Cut the canteloupe and melon in half. Use a spoon to scoop out the flesh.  Slice lengthwise.

2.   Press the cookie cutters around the edge of the fruit.

3.  Gently slide the fruit onto the lollipop stick or kabob skewer, alternate the melon and canteloupe.  Top with a grape.

5.  Vampire Apple Bites

Kids will love chomping away on these ghoulish vampire apple bites!

What you will need:

  • Red Delicious Apples (one apple makes 4)
  • Sunflower seeds or slivered almonds
  • Sliced strawberries
  • Lemon juice

Directions:

1.  Rinse, dry and cut the apple into 4 sections. Dip the cut sides of the apple in lemon juice to prevent browning.

2.  Use a sharp knife to cut a mouth into the apple.  Dip the cut sides of the apple in lemon juice to prevent browning.  Don’t worry about trying to make the mouth perfectly straight.

3.   Stick the seeds or almonds into the apple to make teeth.  For the tongue, add a sliced strawberry to the middle of the apple.

4.  Serve with peanut butter dip.

6.  Veggie Jack-O-Lantern

This jack-o-lantern is sure to get your kids to each some veggies!

What you will need:

  • Baby carrots
  • Celery
  • A round platter

Directions:

1.  Rinse and dry carrots and celery.

2.  Arrange the carrots around the platter.  Cut  a few pieces of celery and arrange them in triangles to make the eyes and nose.  Cut a zig zag design into a stalk piece of celery for the mouth.

3.  Serve with peanut butter dip.

7.  Halloween Hand Pies

What’s more yummy than a pie you can hold in your hand?  (I used my new pocket pie maker to make the ghost in the middle and I LOVE it!)

Halloween-Hand-Pies-Healthy-Treat

What you will need:

  • Pie crust (I use Sally’s Baking Addiction’s recipe or you can use store bought)
  • Pie filling (I used my daughter’s favorite honey apple pie recipe)
  • Large halloween cookie cutters
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • Parchment paper

Directions:

1.  Prepare pie filling and set aside.

2.  Roll out pie crust on a floured surface.  Use cookie cutter to cut out shapes.

3.   Lay on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper.  Place a spoonful of pie filling in the enter of the crust. Careful not to put too much or it will spill out during baking.

4.  Roll out the top crust to make it a bit larger than the bottom.  Gently place on top of the pie filling.  Depending on the shape, you may need to flip it over so that it lines up with the shape of the bottom crust.

5.  Use a fork to seal the edges.

6. Use the sharp tip of a knife to carve faces into the pies.

7.  Brush the egg wash on the top crust.  Bake at 400 for about 15 minutes or until the crust is golden brown.

8.  Banana Ghost Pops

These banana ghost pops are so good that we don’t always wait until Halloween to enjoy them in my house.  They taste just like banana ice cream!

What you will need:

  • Bananas
  • Vanilla yogurt
  • Popsicle sticks
  • Mini chocolate chips
  • Parchment paper

Directions:

1.  Peel bananas and cut them in half.  Insert popsicle stick into the cut side of the banana

2.  Dip the banana in yogurt.  Make sure it is completely covered.  Add chocolate chip eyes

3.  Carefully lay banana on a tray lined with parchment paper.  Place the tray in the freezer for about an hour or until frozen.

4.  Store in the freezer in an airtight container.

9.  Clementine Jack-O-Lanterns

These cuties are perfect for treat bags or trick-or-treaters.

What you will need:

  • Clementines
  • Black non-toxic marker

Directions:

Use the marker to draw faces on each clementine.

10. Popcorn Bar

If you feel the need to bring some candy into your halloween celebration, create a popcorn bar and mix in a few candy toppings along with healthy options like granola and raisins.

What you will need:

  • Popcorn
  • Raisins
  • Gummy worms
  • Other popcorn toppings like cheddar cheese, cinnamon, and cayenne pepper, granola, chocolate chips or other candy options
  • Treat bags

Directions:

Make popcorn and top with any of the above.

Bonus Treat

One of my other favorite healthy halloween treats are these fruit jack-o-lanterns.  My daughter’s friends go crazy over them every year.

Happy Halloween!!

Be Inspired.
