With each new school year comes new responsibility for your children. That should apply to home as well. They grow up so fast and sometimes it can feel like a punch in the gut when they don’t need you anymore. But doing things for them at home that they really should be doing for themselves does not pause time or stop them from growing up. It also does not prepare them for the real world. Raising independent, confident and self-sufficient adults starts with what you are teaching them now. They’ve got to learn how to balance school, activities, personal time and chores the same as we have to balance work, responsibilities at home and so much more. Requiring kids to do for themselves teaches them how to manage their time as well as how to perform the basic domestic duties necessary to maintain a home in the future. It can also be quite the confidence booster.
Not sure where to start? I’ve created a neat little chore list for kids by age to help you assign age appropriate tasks and help you decide what chores they can handle. Download the chart.
Keep in mind this is just a recommended list and chores should be assigned based on your child’s ability to manage each task. And it is not necessary to perform every chore on the list. The point is not for them to do the chores perfectly but rather to get in the habit of doing them. Whether or not you want to pay an allowance for completing chores is totally up to you. Personally, I don’t believe in paying children to perform chores but that’s a post for another day☺
