How to Start (and Stick With) Journaling
It’s January, which means you’ve probably bought more journals to add to the collection you didn’t use last year. I know this because I’m a journal-holic too! Now that we have them, let’s talk about how to put them to good use. Here are some tips on how to start and stick with journaling this year.
The Power of Writing
Journaling isn’t just about putting words on paper—it’s a tool for clarity, growth, and transformation. Here’s why it works:
- Reduces Stress – Writing down your thoughts can help process emotions and ease anxiety.
- Boosts Creativity – Putting pen to paper helps unlock new ideas and perspectives.
- Enhances Self-Awareness – Journaling encourages reflection and helps you better understand yourself.
- Improves Focus & Goal-Setting – A journal can help you track progress, set intentions, and stay accountable.
- Acts as a Mental Dump – Sometimes, you just need to clear your mind, and writing it all down helps.
Types of Journals & How to Use Them
Not all journals serve the same purpose. Some are designed for self-reflection, while others help with organization, goal-setting, or creativity. Choosing a journal that aligns with your needs can make it easier to build a consistent habit. Here are different types of journals to help you get started:
Self-Care Journal
This is my go-to for checking in with myself daily. I use it to track:
- How I’m feeling emotionally and physically
- What I plan to accomplish for the day
- How I’m taking care of myself (exercise, hydration, nutrition, rest, and small acts of self-care)
Prompt Journal
Sometimes, we need guidance in our writing. Prompt journals help me:
- Go deeper into self-reflection
- Find motivation and clarity
- Work through emotions and challenges with guided questions
Free Writing Journal
No rules, no structure—just writing whatever comes to mind. Free writing helps:
- Get thoughts out of my head and onto paper
- Verbalize ideas I didn’t know I had
- Clear mental clutter and gain insight into what’s really on my mind
My Favorite Journals
Here are a few of my favs:
- The Everygirl X Day Designer Self-Care Planner
- Better Every Day
- Oprah’s The Life You Want Love and Happiness Journal
With all these benefits in mind, how to start and stick with journaling is all about taking the first step and making it a habit. Start with just five minutes a day, pick a time that works for you, and remember—there’s no right or wrong way to journal. The key is consistency. So grab that fresh notebook and let’s make 2025 the year we actually fill the pages!
